Design Planning your Northern Virginia Outdoor Space

August 13, 2018

With homeowners staying put, one of the biggest demands in recent years has been an increase in outdoor entertaining space. Homeowners are spending more time entertaining in their homes verses spending more money on vacations, which means more emphasis on quality design and functionality. Check out our new blog this week featuring our past outdoor projects that showcase the various ways you can transform your outdoor living space!

1. Complete Outdoor Entertaining Area

As you can see from the photo below, a complete outdoor entertaining area is the best option especially if you love your neighborhood. This client of ours located in Manassas, VA, was looking to expand their outdoor space and wanted to transform their wooded lot into a backyard oasis.

To accomplish this, we built a screened-in porch, outdoor grilling station and an expansive deck made of the resistant material called Zuri decking. It is similar to Trex, except that it has a longer life in terms of weathering.

2. Screened-In Porches

Screened-In porches are a true symbolism of Southern comfort. A screened-in porch can be used all year round depending on your climate.  These type of porches range from completely basic with exposed interior finish to the higher-end finish, as seen below.

We completed the screened-in porch for our clients in Vienna, VA in 2017. The homeowners were looking for a way to increase their outdoor space, but wanted somewhere to go even when it was raining outside. By adding the ceiling fan, it also allows to be able to use the space even during the dog days of summer. This porch is highlighted by the beautifully stained cedar ceiling and recessed lighting. Custom trim around the porch accentuates the charm and character of this screened-in porch.

3. Covered Patio & Portico

Covered patios are also in high demand because they can be used year round, depending on the weather, and make for wonderful entertaining areas around poolside outdoor spaces. The patio below was custom designed for a client in Vienna, VA. Tiles were hand selected in our showroom and the cedar boards that cover the ceiling of the patio were intricately installed on the vaulted ceiling to allow for a dramatic visual effect of the design of the patio. A portico is a great design option for homeowners that do not have the space to build out a full porch, such as a box colonial, that is square in shape. The portico adds shelter from the elements, while still enhancing the beauty of the stonework of a front walkway.

4. Sunroom

Sunrooms have become more popular over the past few years, as they serve as multipurpose rooms for homeowners. Some homeowners may use them as living rooms, art studios, a place to keep their pets, or simply a quiet reading area. The great thing about having a sunroom built on to your home is that it allows natural sunlight to come into your home, but is still air-conditioned, so it can truly be used year-round for whatever best suits the needs of your family.

The sunroom shown below was done for a client of ours that was looking to increase the square footage of their home, while allowing more sun into their home due to living on a very wooded lot. The homeowners utilize the space as an extra living room and dining room space to entertain guests.
