Designing Your Wet Bar- Northern Virginia

October 27, 2016

Typically built in the basement, a wet bar is a great addition to any living area in your home. Wet bars provide a convenient space to grab a drink, relax, and even heat up some popcorn or pizza to watch during movie night. They add a touch of comfort and convenience while entertaining friends and family. Whether you are building a brand new wet bar, or remodeling an old one, read below for different materials and styles to consider.

Just like any room in your house, a wet bar design should reflect your personal style. If your taste is elegant and classic, then you may want to consider a dark wood bar with a marble or granite countertop and leather-wrapped stools. You can add lighting within the wet bar to create a soft, relaxing glow or a bright light while snacking and watching the game. Bar shelves can be filled with wine glasses, crystal, and top shelf wine and spirits. Popular paint colors that will accent the bar’s design include red, ivory or a deep purple. Just like designing a kitchen or bath, wet bars are customizable to fit your life and personal style.

Wet Bar Designs and Materials

Living Room Wet Bar

1. Space and Design

The amount of space you have will determine what you can do with the design. This is not to say that small spaces can’t yield an amazing design. If space is limited, you can have a freestanding bar. With a lot of square footage, be sure to consider functionality (Will you have a game room? What kind of seating will you have?) Most bars are 42 inches high, and bar overhangs tend to be about 12 inches.

2. Structure

If you have a freestanding bar, you must account for stability. Cabinets, sinks, and refrigerators should be located underneath the bar top to maintain stability. For built-in wet bars, an L-shaped or curved design is the most structurally sound.

3. Materials

Finished woods are the most popular materials in wet bars because they emulate the traditional old pub style. Cherry, oak, maple, and mahogany are great choices. As for bar top materials, granite and marble are favorites. For sinks, appliances, and other fixtures, stainless steel is the most common choice.

Tip: Access to water and electricity are essential to any wet bar design.

Popular Wet Bar Trends and Styles

1. Wine Storage

If your wet bar has a wine theme, you may want to feature open wine storage, a wine cooler, a sink, and storage for glasses and other bar accessories (e.g., decanters).

2. Beverage Center

A “beverage center” is a room that has the tools necessary for any beverage, including both coffee and cocktails. You could opt to have an espresso machine, a wine cooler, a sink, refrigerator, and open shelves for glasses and other accessories.

3. Butler's Pantry Bar

A butler’s pantry bar typically spans across the wall of the entire space. It can be used as a great transitional space between two rooms (like the kitchen and dining room, or media room and living room). It includes upper cabinets, a long bar top, and lots of seating. It is multifunctional in that it can be used as an additional dining space.

4. Seated Bar

This is a classic, and it can also be used as a spot for morning coffee or other meals. It’s a sit-down bar that accommodates a large group of people (typically up to eight), with stools situated around it.

5. Sports Bar

The sports bar is another classic. It’s popular among men (see the infamous “man cave”) and it can include a lounge area, flat screen TV, and sports memorabilia. It usually includes a refrigerator and sink for convenience.

6. Game Room Bar

A basement wet bar as part of a game room is a popular choice. You can invest in a poker or pool table, air hockey or even arcade games to give the bar area a fun feel.
