Making the Most of Unused Space in Your Northern Virginia Home

We’ve blogged about making use of ALL the unused space in your home in the past – but have you ever thought about turning your attic into usable living space? A guest room? A media room? A study?

Maybe adding a shed dormer window would add valuable natural light, allow for fresh air, and of course increase head room? It also makes a great spot for a reading nook or built ins.

The angled ceilings are INSTANT architectural interest… Use them! Add beadboard to them! Paint them a bright and fun color! Play up unusual spaces with a bold wallpaper!

Lighting is essential – but the unusual ceiling angles don’t always lend themselves to surface mounts or chandeliers. Wall sconces are IDEAL and can be a great design element.

There are several things to consider before tackling this idea, and the following article from “This Old House” addresses them.
