The Pros and Cons of Using Wallpaper

July 01, 2016

Wallpaper is a great way to bring colors, textures, and patterns into any space. Depending on the style you choose, it can truly be a standout element of any room. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to using wallpaper. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Most wallpapers will last 10 to 15 years (while paint needs retouching every two to three years). It's durable and will stand up to wear and tear, particularly in high traffic areas. If needed, you can take a sponge to most wallpapers.

It's versatile.

We love using wallpaper because there are endless choices of colors, textures, and patterns. Wallpaper can truly be the standout element in any room, depending on the design you choose.

Visual appeal.

Paint, while beautiful, is limited in that you can only paint solid colors on walls. Using wallpaper allows you to be creative. There are many different textures (for example, foil) that paint simply can't create.

It's cost effective.

Usually wallpaper has a high cost up front. However, it's cost effective (when compared to paint) because it lasts for such a long time.

Removal is daunting.

If you've ever had to remove wallpaper, you know what we're talking about. Taking wallpaper down is a tedious and annoying process. If you have wallpaper to remove, we recommend consulting with a home improvement professional to ensure that you have the right tools and avoid damage to your walls.

Humidity can be problematic.

Humidity will cause wallpaper to loosen and peel off the walls. Be mindful of where you're putting it up - humid spaces like bathrooms may not be the best choice without good ventilation.

It can be expensive.

The cost of using wallpaper is both a pro and a con. The downside is that the initial cost can be high, especially if you choose a more high end brand.

It can be difficult to replace.

Unfortunately, if your wallpaper is damaged and you need to replace it, it may be difficult to find the same pattern depending on when you first installed it. Often times, patterns are discontinued and this can make replacing it a challenge.
