The Top 5 Home Improvement Projects for Spring

April 03, 2015

We’re excited that it’s finally starting to feel like spring! As the weather warms up and the days grow longer, there are many projects that you can start this spring. From adding a screened in porch to avoid bugs to putting a new coat of finish on your deck, these projects will leave your home feeling fresh and renewed. Here are five projects we’re looking forward to starting this spring:

1. Build a New Deck

Spring-Deck   A great deck is the showpiece of an inspired backyard, and spring is a prime time to add one. To ensure your deck affords you the most value and enjoyment, consider using an online deck planner to help you envision your deck before you begin building.

2. Update Your Current Deck with Refinishing and/or Patio Furniture

Spring-Deck-Updates   If your deck only needs an update, refinishing it with a nice stain or paint is a great option. Repairing any aging or splintered wood is especially important if you have children or like to walk barefoot.

Another great way to update your deck is by updating your patio furniture. The right furniture will add comfort to any outdoor space. Read 8 tips for choosing the right patio furniture from Better Homes and Gardens here.

3. Add Landscaping

Updating your landscaping helps add color and a refined appearance to your yard. Simple changes like adding shrubs, vines, and flowers can make outdoor space more inviting, and there are some very simple ways of doing so. See Southern Living’s 10 best landscaping ideas here.

4. Screen-In Your Porch

Spring-ScreenedInPorch   Imagine sitting outside in the summer evenings, enjoying a fire, good food, and good company – but you’re constantly being swarmed with mosquitoes. Unfortunately, Northern Virginia is a humid region, and bugs seem to be all around in the warmer months. Adding a screened-in porch (or just a screen to your already existing porch) is a great solution.

5. Plant a Vegetable or Herb Garden

Spring-Gardening   As gardening grows in popularity, you might consider adding raised planting beds to your landscaping. Raised beds not only make caring for and harvesting your garden easier - no bending required - they can also function as a decorative enhancement to your outdoor environment.
