Remember the 80’s? My hair certainly does. How did you decorate your home? Did you have hunter green and burgundy everywhere? Track lighting? Gigantic stereo speakers? How about a wallpaper border? And let’s NOT forget mirrored walls. I did. I admit it. * Shudder * Apologies for the flashback, but I’m leading up to the point of this blog.
When I work with remodeling clients, a vital part of my job is helping them select their finish materials for their new spaces. Most people have a pretty good idea of what they like and don’t like, but struggle with choices that may be considered “trendy”. For example, what if you absolutely love the look of a vessel sink in your Powder Room, but don’t want a potential buyer to roll through in 2027 and say “Hey, remember when those sinks were so popular in 2017?” How do you decide if it’s a trendy item worth committing to?
I think the key is to keep the traditional style as the dominate design elements and tie in whimsical and trendy pieces as accents. This way, if and when your tastes change – OR – you sell your home to someone who might not be a huge fan of a vessel sink, it’s easy enough to change out. In other words, fixed and larger items like cabinetry, countertops, and flooring should probably be where you stick with the traditional. A backsplash? A paint color? A faucet? And yes, even that vessel sink? Trendy works.
Here are two examples:
Maybe your new dream Kitchen has classic white cabinets and honed black granite countertops. Why not use a trendy, fun paint color like gray for the walls? Grays are SUPER popular right now, and in fact Behr Paint has 60 shades of it for you to choose from! http://www.behr.com/consumer/inspiration/life-in-gray

How about your gorgeous new spa-like Master Bathroom? Carrera or Calacatta marble is always a timeless and popular choice. Why not accent your shower or tub walls with some fun glass deco tiles?

It’s all about finding the right balance, and reminding yourself that YES your tastes will change over the years. I know I had some purple eye shadow in 1986 I’m still trying to forget about.
